Lot Title:
1915-S NGC MS-65.
Description:
This is a dynamite representative of the 1915-S Buffalo nickel, a substantially difficult issue at the gem grade level or higher. The vintage surface quality cannot be questioned, as the patina is suffused with subtle, meandering threads of intertwined lime-green and magenta-rose iridescence - natural toning whose character cannot be artificially imitated and which only occurs after lengthy storage in an album. A very few tiny carbon flecks are sprinkled beneath the Indian's chin and at the front of his face, but are so pale as to be inconsequential to the eye-appeal. At this grade level, the bison needs to be epitomized by a great strike, and that is certainly the case here. The horn and tail are prominently defined, and the animal's hide is sharply delineated. Indeed, striking weakness is noticeable only at LIBERTY on the obverse, but on balance, nobody would argue the MS-65 grade for such a lustrous, handsome pearl-grey piece.

Typical strike deficiency is responsible for weak central details, though the bison's horn is fortunately well defined. A fairly pronounced yellowish cast tints this piece, and the eye appeal is just... |

A luminous amber glow smolders from both sides of this somewhat difficult early mintmarked buffalo nickel issue. The patina shimmers nicely under a good lamp and invokes the imagery of rainbow... |

This Buffalo is steel gray in color with incandescent hues of rose. Full horn detail can be observed on the reverse. Only a small bit of wear is holding this coin back from a Mint State grade. |
