Lot Title:
1870 ten-cent (J-833). NGC PF-64 BN.
Description:
Toning is remarkably bright and brilliant for a copper coin, and it is interesting to know that this coin was previously certified by NGC at the same PF-64 level, but incorrectly attributed as a silver example!! Indeed, the coloration pattern is convincingly suggestive of a silver piece with rainbow toning, but this anecdote gives an indication of the remarkable character of tone exhibited. Every indication of a gem grade is visible, including a terrific strike, defect-free surfaces and fabulous eye-appeal, but a small patch of corrosion affects the reverse rim at 8:00 and almost certainly determines the grade. The reverse is identical to that used on regular production dimes.

1870 J-832 (incorrect J-833 shown on NGC label). NGC PF-64 BN.
NGC's incorrect attribution as J-833 (copper planchet) instead of J-832 (silver planchet) is forgivable, since the toning is so deep and colorful that it would be easy to mistake this as copper... |
