Lot Title:
1882 five-cent (J-1687). PCGS PF-66 (finest known).
Description:
At the PR-66 level, this J-1687 is tied with one example at NGC (presumably a different example) for distinction as the highest graded, and perusal of the surfaces leads to the conclusion that it is indeed a magnificent piece. Each side is suffused with marvelous, original copper-gold patina, and the proof format closely resembles a regular production cameo proof. Details are wonderfully sharp in their entirety, and doubling on "82" in the date is plain to see, each digit repunched in opposing direction. The design overall closely resembles that put into production for the five-cent coins of 1883, except for the presence of IN GOD WE TRUST and resulting different arrangement of the stars.
