Lot Title:
1868 five-cent pattern, (J-623, P-692, Low R.6), Plain Edge, Nickel. NGC PF-65 CAC.
Description:
Liberty's enlarged portrait from the familiar three-cent nickel that was already in production appears on this pattern five-cent piece, and the laurel wreath reverse is similar to it's smaller cousin as well, except the Roman III is replaced by an Arabic "5". Contrast between fields and devices seems to easily qualify for a "CAMEO" designation for this example, but because this coin is in an early NGC no-line holder, the designation may have simply not been available. Struck in nickel, each side has mellowed just a little to become suffused with beige-grey patina. For those intimately familiar with the three-cent nickel series and familiar with its diminutive size, it is an interesting optical illusion that causes this proposed five-cent coin to appear larger than the regular issue five-cents of the period, although in fact, this is a regulation sized planchet. A remarkable coin, to be sure!
