Lot Title:
1867 five-cent (J-561). PCGS PF-64.
Description:
Longacre's name rests proudly beneath the bust, which is an artful rendition of Liberty's portrait facing left, replete with four stars, four feathers and a headband stating "UNION & LIBERTY". On the reverse, a large Roman numeral "V" is superimposed over a decorated shield, with IN GOD WE TRUST arced above. This design is aesthetically much finer than that of the shield nickel eventually put into production! Tiny hairlines in the fields may have influenced the PR-64 grade shown on the PCGS green-label holder, but for an aluminum piece, the surfaces are rather pristine in appearance. Interestingly, the obverse die was affected by surprisingly deep die rust at the center of the upper feather. Why should a pattern die have lain around long enough to develop a rusty patch?
