Description:

The Scotsman Auction Company is of course familiar with pattern coins, having offered innumerable pieces in a wide variety of grades over the years. Today's auction features a selection that is brief, yet high caliber, including several duplicate examples from a single client's collection. Descriptions are offered herein for the purpose of the consignor gaining an understanding of their respective grade and appearance, but for the collector wishing to seek more information, your cheerful cataloger suggests two references, from which most of the following information was provided. First is United States Patterns and Related Issues by Andrew W. Pollock III, the edition of choice being (c) 1994, and second is The Official Red Book, United States Pattern Coins by J. Hewitt Judd, M.D. Together, these volumes provide comprehensive history and data for this fascinating series. J-228 is a transitional issue, in that the regular Indian head cent obverse die was used in conjunction with the reverse die designed for 1860. It is probably the most popular auxiliary coin collected by enthusiasts of the series. Proof strikings are known, but are far scarcer than this, the common "business strike" type, as is indicated by the NGC MS-65 grade. A terrific gem, the obverse is free from marks save a tick far left of Liberty's chin, and the reverse displays a touch of darkening tone near the rims. Both sides sparkle with delightful luster.
