Lot Title: Judd-225: 1858 Gold Dollar Proof, copper, gilt, ANACS.
Description: Avant Garde Collection. Judd-224 and Judd-225 are off-metal strikings related by having been struck off the same pair of dies, but only a single Judd-224 was struck in gold, and it resides in the ANS collection. The difference between these and the normal issue 1858 gold dollar lies in the appearance of typeface, which is taller for this pattern, and therefore attributed to Paquet. As aficionados of the famous 1861 "Paquet reverse" double-eagle might know from their research, Anthony C. Paquet (1814 - 1882) came to America at age thirty-five and opened an engraving shop in New York. Practical experience at his craft led to subsequent contract work with the Philadelphia mint, and ultimately to a full time position as assistant engraver. Paquet never became Chief Engraver, but his legacy rests securely upon the many patterns and medals he engraved during his tenure. In addition to such standard duties, Paquet was given various assignments to improve the designs of U.S. coins, and one of his "signatures" included the use of lettering taller and narrower than that used on coins then in use. Examples of the 1858 patter dollar have virtually never appeared at public sale, affirming the extreme rarity that is suggested in the Judd book. ANACS AU details, Rarity 8. (PCGS# 011934)
