Lot Title:
1869 fifty-cent (J-748). PCGS PF-65CAM.
Description:
In a design much unlike any struck for normal production, Liberty's portrait faces right with a diadem eponymously inscribed, and a ribbon swoops below her, bearing the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The date is curiously relegated to the reverse, beneath a wreath of oak and laurel leaves surrounding the prominent denomination. This is undoubtedly one of Barber's better renditions, and it leads to a very attractive coin. Besides, as implied by the PCGS PF-65 CAM grade, technical preservation is outstanding for this gem, allowing full appreciation of the aesthetics. Faint silver-beige patina envelopes both sides, gravitating very slightly toward a darker tone at the rims. Tiny raised bumps on the surfaces are indicative of minimal die rust, most of it polished away, as can be presumed by the extensive polish lines visible throughout the entire field area. Between the two grading services, only two coins exceed the PF-65 level offered here.
