1870 J-832 (incorrect J-833 shown on NGC label). NGC PF-64 BN.
Description:
NGC's incorrect attribution as J-833 (copper planchet) instead of J-832 (silver planchet) is forgivable, since the toning is so deep and colorful that it would be easy to mistake this as copper masquerading as the more precious white metal. The distinction is important since the silver version of this marvelous William Barber pattern is given an R.7 rating, although these are very rare and desirable patterns in any format. For that matter, the PF-64 grade needs some explanation since this coin looks far nicer than that, with the caveat being clearly a dark discoloration on the left rim of the reverse. Adding to the confusion of the planchet metal content, there were sets of this same pattern minted in three metals, with aluminum being the third type offered, and all three metal types were also available with reeded or plain edges! Nobody knows why these sets were produced, but the cynical numismatist would certainly look towards financial profit as one (ahem) potential motivation. In this case, despite encapsulation, a reeded edge can just be made out and reliably attributed. Despite the caveat already mentioned, this is a spectacularly attractive piece, and the impetus for the fallacious "brown" designation stems from the deep, mossy earth tones that project from the obverse fields, modulating rapidly into a surrounding border of brilliant jade-green iridescence. The reverse is thoroughly drenched in brilliant jade-green that has spilled over from the obverse, and it brightens into chartreuse illumination along the left side in the same vicinity of the spot. Although strike weakness has been noted by some catalogers for competing examples of this issue, such is not the case here. This is a carefully struck coin that verges upon being fully defined, even at the outer edges of the familiar cereal wreath on the reverse.
