(About The Images)
1800 (S-197, R.1). PCGS AU-53. 1800 (S-197, R.1). PCGS AU-53.
Lot Title: 1800 (S-197, R.1). PCGS AU-53.
Description: S-197 is a common Sheldon variety, simple to attribute since crumbly die chips penetrate the first zero in the date, giving it the appearance of a "Q" (and thus, popular appellation as the "Q variety"). Additional small lumps rise out of the obverse field beneath the ends of the ribbon, while the reverse displays a wide scattering of similar tiny lumps, and a somewhat larger die break occurs at "IB". Apparently, this die, though used for just one variety, saw some interesting extracurricular activity prior to being put into use! This is a handsome example of S-197, featuring only shallow, scattered contact abrasions in the fields, and surprisingly less evidence of contact on the actual devices. A darker, oblong stain spreads from the center of the reverse toward 4:00 and is accompanied by a couple of other smaller stains of same origin.
