Lot Title:

1927-S PCGS MS-64.
Description:
The 1920s were not kind at all to nickel production at San Francisco, with poor planchet stock and weak strikes being practically the norm for that mint. Contrary to the prevailing notion of what to expect from a 1927-S nickel, this coin provides exceptionally sharp details that rival that of even the finest example your fearless cataloger has ever seen. The bison's head is completely defined, the tail displays a full split at the tip, and both hooves are perfectly formed. The Indian's braid stands up in perfect high relief, and only the very highest area of his cheekbone displays a hint of weakness, with evidence of original planchet marks remaining. Only the tops of a couple of letters in LIBERTY lack complete definition. Topping off this picture of a very choice coin is the very attractive sky-blue iridescence that pervades the fields and adds considerable appeal to the glittering luster. PCGS has graded 20 finer examples (and NGC 24), but it is doubtful that many of with higher numeric grades will exceed the sharpness of this beauty. If a number is all that matters, then wait for one in higher grade, but if sharpness is most important, then this one is it.
