1927-S PCGS MS-63.
Description:
While overshadowed in reputation by other branch mint issues of the 1920s as a victim of strike difficulties, 1927-S remains a difficult coin to find with sharp details on good planchet stock. This coin features a somewhat remarkable appearance due to surface reflectivity that is reminiscent of a proof striking, and the strike is really exceptional for the date. Aficionados of the series will be most interested to know that the bison is nearly as defined as can be, with the horn razor sharp and the tail displaying a full split of the tip. Even the furrowed texture atop the bison's shoulder is thoroughly defined. Although there are a couple of bag marks on the obverse, including one on the Indian's nose, the grade is likely most determined by the slightly deficient planchet quality as seen from the reverse. A number of olive-grey carbon spots can be seen, and were likely present at the time of production. Nonetheless, the PCGS MS-63 grade is highly appropriate, and it would be really tough to improve on this choice candidate without spending thousands more for even a single point increase in grade.
