Lot Title:
1879 PCGS MS-66.
Description:
1879 is one of the dates in the gold dollar series that is notorious for an absurdly small mintage (3000), but an excessively high survival rate that resulted in a coin that is much more common today than one would expect. Further, since the limited mintage was produced off of fresh dies and promptly put away by collectors, those that survive are often superbly preserved. That is the case here, with this sparkling very-gem example graded MS-66 by PCGS. However, unusual for the issue (or any gold issue) is the extent to which each side is toned in iridescent shades of gleaming peppermint-blue, and collectors who pursue toned gold will certainly want to examine this example. Furthering the notoriety of 1879 is the frequency with which LIBERTY is found missing from Liberty's headband. Many high grade examples are known to have no letters present, but this particular example fully displays "LI....Y" and a ghostly impression of the missing letters in between. Stunning!

A low mintage (3000) and semi-prooflike Philadelphia product that seems undergraded at first blush, though a loupe reveals a few wispy hairlines in the obverse fields. This coin is imbued with... |

Despite the modest (and technically correct) grade assessment of just MS-61, this is a fabulous coin. Fully prooflike, but not so designated on the old NGC slab, as it was certified at a time when... |
