Lot Title:
1857-C ICG AU-50.
Description:
Fields and devices are somewhat less abraded than would typically be expected of Charlotte gold, with just a small cluster of minor bagmarks on Liberty's cheek. The surfaces are definitely too pale to pass as fully original, but many collectors will appreciate some remnants of mint luster and the rather sharp strike, the latter characteristic being all too uncommon for the issue. Tool marks in the die produced the distinctive raised lines next to the right obverse rim -- a diagnostic of the only known die.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Charlotte struck 31,360 half-eagles off a single pair of dies in 1857, and thus the level of strike quality ranges widely from quite sharp to rather poor. The present example provides evidence of an... |
