Lot Title:
1857-C NGC AU-55.
Description:
Charlotte struck 31,360 half-eagles off a single pair of dies in 1857, and thus the level of strike quality ranges widely from quite sharp to rather poor. The present example provides evidence of an average strike, though of course, brief circulation played a role in the slight flattening of the hair at the top of Liberty's head and the curls over her ear. Feathers on the eagle's neck and the arrow shafts are a touch soft as well. Underlying brilliance is attenuated slightly by amber-gold patina that is half a shade darker on the obverse, and only peeps of luster appear at the peripheral areas.

Fields and devices are somewhat less abraded than would typically be expected of Charlotte gold, with just a small cluster of minor bagmarks on Liberty's cheek. The surfaces are definitely too pale... |
