Lot Title:
1857-C XF details/cleaned.
Description:
Brassy color on the portrait is surrounded by curiously greenish-gold tint in the fields, and on the whole, this is a rather harshly cleaned Charlotte coin. Many hairlines crisscross through the fields, and the reverse emits odd reflectivity. 1857-C is one of the more common Charlotte half-eagles, at least by Charlotte mintage standards, and examples are typically found with the VF details offered here.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Charlotte struck 31,360 half-eagles off a single pair of dies in 1857, and thus the level of strike quality ranges widely from quite sharp to rather poor. The present example provides evidence of an... |
