Lot Title:
1859-D NGC XF-45.
Description:
1859-D is a low mintage date in the half-eagle run, with only 10,366 struck, and high grade survivors are predictably rare. In spite of fifteen points of wear, this example provides surprising gleam from the fields, perhaps suggesting that it was semi-reflective at the time of production. There is a short pinscratch at the center of the bust, and overall, this is a moderately abraded coin, yet the reverse displays about a quarter of the original cartwheel luster. One nuisance is a bright green plastic thread adhering to the eagle's right (observed) wing inside the slab. Does anyone know when NGC went to artificial turf?

A glossy appearance attests to lightly polished surfaces, yet hints of indigenous mint luster tenaciously cling to a couple of stars and the interior of the rims. Despite the unoriginal surfaces,... |
