Lot Title:
1856-C PCGS XF-45.
Description:
Douglas Winter has stated that "1856-C is probably the most underrated Charlotte Half Eagle", and perusal of price guide values in circulated grades does indeed show that they are valued at about the same level as any other mint marked half-eagle of the antebellum era. Nearly a vintage quality coin, the surfaces display some color around the devices, though the broadest areas of each side are a tad lacking in patina. The major devices on both sides are bluntly struck, to put it mildly, as Liberty's portrait displays poor separation of hair curls, and the eagle hardly has any neck feathers, but this type of strike is simply par for the course for the issue. Despite the expected numerous abrasions overall, the only singularly noticeable mark is a shallow and somewhat worn reed mark below the arrowheads on the reverse.

It is not usual to find a high quality Charlotte gold coin uncertified (and collectors of a cynical bent might say "certified as well), yet at hand is a handsome 1856-C that poses quite an appealing... |

1856-C ANACS AU-55 Details Cleaned.

Faint traces of original mint luster can be seen lurking around the devices of both the obverse and reverse. The coin has AU+ details and only minimal wear. There are a few marks, but they are... |

1856-C ANACS AU-55 Details, Cleaned.
Even though its ANACS label states: "AU 55 DETAILS CLEANED," this Charlotte Half Eagle issue is quite elusive, with most of its 28,457 production entering into commercial channels. A splendidly... |

1856-C ICG AU-58.
Charlotte Mint gold has been red hot for a couple of years. There is no reason not to expect this trend to continue. This piece comes from the smallest Five Dollar mintage of the 1850s. A mere... |
