Lot Title:
|
1843-D Small Date, Crosslet 4. XF-45.
|
Description:
|
Occasional accents of coppery tone interact with underlying butter-gold surface color to provide attractive eye appeal that benefits this 1843-D quarter-eagle, consistently one of the better-produced issues from the Dahlonega mint. This assertion is borne out by pleasing details that include reasonably sharp hair definition and well sculpted feathers on the reverse. The eagle's talon and shield are both fairly distinct, and all of the obverse stars are nicely segmented. While many coins issued from Dahlonega were prone to excessive handling marks during their use in circulation, fewer than the expected number of abrasions affect this example, and only a smallish patch of trivial scratches scribbled above the peak of the coronet warrant passing mention. Removed from a PCGS XF-45 slab with tag include.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

1843-D is considered the "common" Dahlonega quarter-eagle, with a mintage of 36,209, though that is well under a tenth the mintage of the 1909-S VDB cent! Pronounced wear affects this honestly... |

This is, without a doubt, as original a gold coin from Dahlonega as can possibly exist. The surfaces retain 100% of their vintage appearance, with dusky grey-gold patina and ashy deposits clinging to... |

1843-D Coronet quarter-eagle, PCGS AU-58

As befits an AU-58 grade, this delightful gold coin has much the appearance of an uncirculated piece. Active mint luster glimmers from each side, and the surface quality is really very good for a... |
