Though not as scarce as its "small date" counterpart, the 1842-C half-eagle as an issue stands as a key date in the series. Between them, the two major services have certified only some sixty examples in all grades, yet price guides generally illustrate a surprisingly gentle escalation in value, perhaps reflecting the fact that fewer collectors specialize in Coronet half-eagles. A scattering of small handling marks pepper the obverse of the present example, while the reverse presents a somewhat cleaner appearance. Mustard-gold color generally prevails, blending with coppery tones nearer the denticles.
