Lot Title:
1873 Closed 3. NGC MS-63.
Description:
A dusting of apricot patina suffuses both sides with a frosty appearance. The luster is perhaps slightly muted, but undeniably unbroken and original. Suitably struck, and lacking any mentionable marks, although a faint hairline traverses Liberty’s lower neck. A low mintage issue, for which the “closed 3” is considered the better variety.

An 1873 "closed 3" quarter eagle in an NGC AU-58 holder pairs up well with an 1878-S quarter-eagle graded AU-55 by PCGS. The coins display a virtually identical appearance from the standpoint of... |
