Lot Title:
1872 J-1249. PCGS PF-63.
Description:
This specimen is ascribed as a Rarity-8, Aluminum, Reeded Edge pattern Eagle (J-1249, P-1391). Given its attributed rarity rating, the estimated quantity extant is 2, possibly 3. Since only one has been validated, and only by one of the two leading certification services, the likelihood of the higher estimated number is highly remote. As is typical for these off-metal issues, this specimen was struck from a pairing of regular prepared Proof dies specifically for a collector. A more precise terminology for this piece would be that of an "off-metal striking" since its planchet is a variation of the mandated metal composition. Off-metal pieces have been popular with collectors over the years, therefore they are considered part of the experimental pattern series. Its superbly frosted motifs are counterbalanced by its deep mirrored fields resulting in the perception of an exquisite cameo. A few scattered marks and abrasions are perceived on its fragile, ductile surfaces. Extremely bold in its design element depictions. A vibrant and somewhat enigmatic issue that should entice the most erudite of this interesting facet of American coinage.
