Lot Title:
|
1793 S-11b, Breen-1645, R-4, Lettered Edge. VF-30.
|
Description:
|
On this variety the Vine and Bars edge device has been supplanted by lettering that reads, "100 FOR A DOLLAR" followed by two tiny leaves. It is the only variety that depicts this double leaf arrangement, and the planchets employed were often faulty. This piece's surfaces, although slightly burnished and with some mild porosity, portray a handsome golden brown aspect. The inscriptions are full and clear. Liberty's profile shows excellent details on her nose, eyes, and lips. A few older scratches are perceived at the date, and one microscopic rim bruise appears at 9:30 on the reverse. Although it does not fall into this variety's Condition Census, it is still a significant representative for this elusive classification.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

1793 Lettered Edge (S-11b) ANACS VF-20.

The lettered edge cannot be viewed within the ANACS holder, but would identify this S-11 die-marriage as the "b" subtype. In reviewing the finest known S-11b (ex-Dan Holmes), it is interesting to... |

1793 Lettered Edge PCGS AU-50.

Luster plays essentially no major role in the grading of copper at this, the commercial AU-50 level, as original coins will have developed patina that should obscure flowline texture, and of course,... |

1793 Lettered Edge (S-11, R-5). PCGS F-12.
|
The slab insert of this PCGS green-label holder prevents precise attribution to either S-11b or S-11c (lettered edge). Imperfect planchet quality is the norm for a 1793 cent of any of the three... |

1793 Lettered Edge. ANACS XF Details, Net VF-20.

Both sides show full detail with light overall porosity, which is a very common look on early copper coins. This coin has much nicer surfaces than the usual coin in a net holder. Liberty's face is... |
