Lot Title:
1911-D NGC MS-62.
Description:
Mintage: 30,100. 69 graded MS-62, 21 higher at NGC. Although not a key to the Saint-Gaudens series, 1911-D certainly holds key status for all the other gold series, and presuming resubmissions as part of the census at MS-62, it has to be considered "rare" at this grade level within the Indian eagle set. One of the first noted visual aspects will be the rotation between the dies of some ten degrees, causing the eagle to face downward slightly. This seems to be a characteristic of many (if not most) 1911-D tens. A terrific strike can be inferred from good detail over the eagle's shoulder, and the feathers in the headdress seem to be fully delineated. Simple observation notes that there are wispy, little hairlines that gather into the obverse left field, and two or three small bagmarks are well hidden within the headdress, but these seem to be the only negative factors with regard to grade. Liberty's cheek actually shows only minimal abrading compared to usual expectations of MS-62. (PCGS# 008869)

As the lowest mintage regular issue from the esteemed Indian eagle series, any 1911-D is certainly worthy of note, though of course other dates suffered much higher attrition rates (namely the 1920-S... |
