Lot Title:
|
1911-D NGC MS-61.
|
Description:
|
As the lowest mintage regular issue from the esteemed Indian eagle series, any 1911-D is certainly worthy of note, though of course other dates suffered much higher attrition rates (namely the 1920-S and 1930-S), and are more valuable. The eye appeal of this example seems considerably stronger than the MS-61 grade assigned by NGC, so closer examination is necessary to discover what may have prevented the graders from considering a higher assessment. Under magnification, three or four shallow little scratches do appear on Liberty's cheek, there is a patch of grey tone at her temple, likely the remnant of a grease stain, and a carbon spot appears above "E" on the headband, but otherwise, this is a refreshingly clean coin. Lovely mint luster sweeps gently through the fields, unimpeded by friction or luster grazes. Considering the steep rise in value from MS-60 through MS-62, the gold specialist should certainly consider the potential upgrade opportunity offered by this very pretty coin.

Mintage: 30,100. 69 graded MS-62, 21 higher at NGC. Although not a key to the Saint-Gaudens series, 1911-D certainly holds key status for all the other gold series, and presuming resubmissions as... |

Mike Wrinkle Collection. Excluding the impossible dates for the series, 1911-D is the premier semi-key for the Indian eagle series, with a paltry mintage of 30,100 mostly responsible for the lack of... |

80 graded MS-62, 26 higher at NGC. A stunning victory for the consignor, this key 1911-D came out of his uncertified collection and immediately registered a grade of MS-62+ at NGC, placing it... |

1911-D is obviously the well-known key to the quarter-eagle series, yet many collectors forget that it is also a semi-key in the Indian eagle series. Small increments in grade become important around... |
