(About The Images)
1855 NGC MS-61. 1855 NGC MS-61.
Lot Title: 1855 NGC MS-61.
Description: Mintage: 26,000, 7 graded MS-61, 11 higher at NGC. Key date coins to any series sometimes seem to be treated with kid gloves when it comes to certification, as the grading company takes on the financial risk of guaranteeing the assigned grade. MS-61 seems to be a slightly conservative grade in this case, certainly when judging by the smooth, lustrous and well-detailed obverse. Admittedly, some "noise" makes its way into the reverse field above the eagle, but large coins rarely escape contact points completely, and even the obverse right field displays a linear abrasion.

Many times, the mid-1850s dollars come with prooflike character, but unlike the collector of Morgan dollars, astute Seated dollar collectors prefer to avoid prooflike coins, since the existing proof population often outnumbers that of the circulation strikes (at least in high grade), and at least within a series where prooflike coins can be difficult to distinguish as true circulating pieces, those specimens showing normal business-class luster leave no doubt as to their true origin. No such confusion takes place here, as the long, swoopy lines of luster pass through well-defined, but not overly sharp peripheral elements and meet up with normal non-squared rims. Almond-grey patina evens out the eye-appeal, which is quite good for the date, easily rivaling that of the typical common hoard 1859-O and 1860-O dates. (PCGS# 006943)
