Lot Title:
1856 NGC XF-45.
Description:
Mintage: 63,500. Specialists know it is much easier to locate cleaned Seated Liberty dollars than it is to hold out for originally toned pieces like this. Excellent sharpness overall benefits from a pleasing, dense layer of dark grey patina that likely subdues underlying luster just a bit. While considered a key to the series, the mintage would suggest otherwise, which begs the question: Why? Evidently, many 1856 dollars were shipped to Asia for use as trade dollars in commerce, which means a large proportion of the original mintage disappeared into melting pots long ago, permanently depleting the supply available to collectors today. 1856 AU/altered surfaces.
Details probably verge on the AU level, but the glossy surfaces seem to suffer from a layer of mulberry colored waxy substance. Despite the unusual patina, fields maintain some level of reflectivity. |
