(About The Images)
1918/7-S PCGS AU-55. 1918/7-S PCGS AU-55.
Lot Title: 1918/7-S PCGS AU-55.
Description: In high grade, the 1918/7-S overdate has few peers among twentieth-century hubbing blunders for the aspects of drama and presentation. Presence of the underdigit "7" in this case benefits from use of an earlier middle-state obverse die (presumed from the evidence of a single light die-clash - later die-states in our experience seem to show multiple clashes), as the features of the errant digit can be plainly seen under low magnification, making this a premium choice for any collector's complete set. And while scarcely inexpensive at the AU level, valuation for the grade typically falls neatly between XF-40 and MS-60, providing a viable opportunity for the dedicated collector with an astute appreciation for UNC-ish coins that don't cost UNC money.

That benefit is precisely what becomes offered here at AU-55, as the pale arctic-silver surfaces show expansive luster and the semi-brilliance typically expected of mint-state quarters. Extremely limited wear really amounts to superficial friction down Liberty's torso, as well as delicate abrading over the eagle's breast and in the field beneath his left (observed) wing. With regard to definition, some appreciable detail was struck at Liberty's head and the shield lacked perhaps three rivets upon manufacture, again indicative of middle-state dies. A grand total of perhaps five carbon flecks will be found throughout, but no particular contact marks can be located anywhere. (PCGS# 005726)
