Description:
|
It is no small task for a coin of the diminutive presence of a half-dime to garner the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice award, but there is a considerable amount of explosive eye-appeal compressed onto the surfaces of this little silver coin. An apt description applies to the aesthetic presence of either side, as the vehicle (presumed to be long-term storage in an album setting) responsible for the exquisite toning managed to impart its welcome effect equally to obverse and reverse. Magenta-tan color joins ivory-white accents toward the central areas and quickly expands into a surrounding band of deep aqua-jade toning that generally surrounds the primary devices. Saturation then cedes gently toward silvery chartreuse pastels toward the rims. Such extensive toning can only be expected to suppress cameo effects, but attentive examination reveals notable matte texture on the upraised devices, though the fields project only moderate reflectivity. An exquisite memento of the Civil War era, with extremely sharp definition commensurate with the proof format. (PCGS# 004447)

It is understood that usually, a proof silver coin graded PR-63 is kept out of a higher grade by hairlines, but in this case, it is the remnants of corrosion that bar upgrade consideration. This... |
