Lot Title: 1877 NGC PF-64 (no line).
Description: Quite often, a coin achieves the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice award despite note even managing a gem grade at one of the major certification services, and that underscores how little technical aspirations can sometimes mean to the appeal of a truly fine coin. NGC assigned a grade of only PF-64 to this half-dollar, but one must realize that the coin is in an old no-line holder that stems from a more conservative era of grading, and furthermore, the coin seems to have been certified long before the "cameo" designation came into use. Anyone can see even at a glance that Liberty's portrait benefits from the presence of thick ivory-crème matte frost, as does the eagle's motif on the reverse, and one might think that the coveted "cameo" assignment should be a lock were the coin ever resubmitted for upgrade. These no-line holders also have a reputation for compelling the enclosed coin to tone at the edges, under the hypothesis that faint chemical reaction leached out of the label insert, reacting with the nearby edge of the coin. That seems to be the case here, as a blazing cobalt-blue and magenta sliver of tone slips above and below Liberty's portrait, while the reverse has become almost entirely enclosed by a similar effect. Technical examination reveals a number of whisper-light hairlines in the fields, and they undoubtedly ascertain the numeric grade. Astute collectors will also note a nicely repunched "77" in the date, as well as exceptionally fine definition everywhere, notable even for a proof striking of this caliber. (PCGS# 006438)

Coloration on the reverse follows the classic album bull's-eye progression, beginning with blazing cobalt-jade at the rim and terminating at a veritable sea of magenta-cinnamon across most of surface....

Artistic license in selection of palette has led to an interesting combination of pastels, with the obverse dominated by pale sunset-orange color that yields to lazy clouds of cyan in the right field....
