Lot Title:
1834 C. Bechtler Gold $5 (Kagin-17), PCGS AU-53.
Description:
Avant Garde Collection. Kagin-17, R.5. "Rutherford" has been spelled out for Kagin-17, while it is abbreviated for the rarer Kagin-19. All "A"s were stamped into the die using an upside-down V, and for that matter, the "G" in GOLD appears to actually be a "C" punch with an added serif. Obviously the die-sinker had limited tools with which to work in creation of these dies! The planchet displays evidence of production issues as well, with small cracks and voids evident on either side, along with greyish flecks of impurity. PCGS has graded two pieces at AU-53, and only eleven higher for this die-marriage. (PCGS# 010112)
