Lot Title:

(1837-42) C. Bechtler Gold $2.50 (Kagin-10), ANACS VF-30.
Description:
Avant Garde Collection. Kagin-10, R.5. The collector who does not specialize in pioneer gold might dismiss these as "unattractive" designs, but the very quaintness of the design, not to mention production issues with the dies, helps explain the charm of owning Bechtler gold. In place of As in the legends, the die sinker simply turned a V upside down to spell out CAROLINA GOLD / CARATS. This is an exceptionally original example that displays warm olive-gold color, with deeper shades nestled next to lettering on both sides. However, a sizable piece is missing from the planchet at 7:00, as viewed from the side facing up in the ANACS slab. Odds are in favor of this being an as-struck anomaly, however. (PCGS# 010067)
