Lot Title:
Pollock-4060: Circa 1967 General Motors Pattern Center, roller dies, NGC.
Description:
Avant Garde Collection. Control number 7/S/M, with the unusual situation whereby "S" has been inscribed low in the obverse left field. Portrayal of a design resembling that of any circulating currency was not legal, hence General Motors chose a simple generic female head for the obverse, and a laurel wreath for the reverse, with nonsensical inscriptions throughout. The purpose of these "cents" struck on an experimental roller press was to demonstrate that 10,000 coins per minute (!) could be produced, though such a lofty standard proved unattainable both in terms of quantity and quality, since the coins are universally poorly detailed.
