1849 Pacific Company $2.50 Die Trial, silver (Kagin-2), PCGS AU-55.
Description:
Avant Garde Collection. Kagin-2, R.6+. Rather astonishing for its graceful simplicity, the 1849 gold quarter-eagle pattern would have made for a remarkably attractive coin had it been put into actual widespread production. Much of the charm for these pieces lies in the magical date "1849" that appears on the eagle side. As it is, zero examples struck in gold are known for the quarter-eagle, while two to four each are known for the dollar, half-eagle and eagle denominations also dated 1849. Collectors may only obtain these in off-metal strikings for the $2.50. PCGS does not specify any sort of attribution as a die-trial, but this appears to be an example struck in silver, richly toned with marvelous coal-grey accents reaching toward the eagle motif. A small patch of parallel scratches on the extreme left of the denomination side will identify the coin for pedigree purposes. (PCGS# 010301)
