Lot Title:
Judd-1539: 1877 Half-Dollar Pattern, copper, NGC.
Description:
Avant Garde Collection. Ex-Dupont. The population for J-1539 may be as small as only two pieces. That plated in the current pattern reference books appears to be brown overall, while NGC supplies a "red" color designation for this piece (though a finicky collector might consider "red-brown" a more appropriate designation -- does it really matter for something this precious?). A number of small dark grey spots bespeckle the obverse left field and Liberty's portrait, while the reverse shows only a minimum number of similar spots. In the event these would ever be conserved away, a recognizable pedigree marker should be the curly strike-through left of the tenth star. Lustrous copper-red overall with burgundy overtones in the faded areas NGC PF-65 (RD), Rarity 8.
