Lot Title:

Judd-1513: 1877 Half-Dollar Pattern, copper, PCGS CAC.
Description:
Avant Garde Collection. Several Judd listings include examples of the 1877 pattern half-dollar that closely mimic the Morgan dollar struck the following year, but Judd-1513 pairs an Morgan's Liberty motif obverse with a new "defiant eagle" reverse to produce this popular die-marriage. The regular issue Seated Liberty half-dollar for 1877 was minted in high quantity, but all pattern pieces of this date are major rarities. This one shows exemplary copper-brown patina over a rather competent strike, with an occasional tinge of red mingling in the protected lower design recesses. One of the consignor's favorite pieces. PCGS PF-65 (CAC), Rarity 7. (PCGS# 061851)
