Judd-1433: 1875 Gold Dollar Proof, aluminum, PCGS CAC.

Description:
|
Avant Garde Collection. A rarity of the highest caliber, it is easy to discover from auction archives that at least three grading incidents between the certification services are for the same coin - this single piece. A struck-through thread on Liberty's neck immediately identifies this as the same die-trial once in a PCGS green-label holder, subsequently in an NGC EdgeView holder, and yet again put back into a PCGS holder. NGC upgraded the proof presentation to "cameo" when the coin was crossed to their holder, and PCGS retained the designation when it was crossed back to their holder the second time around, though a low-contrast appearance results in part to a layer of oxidation on both sides. Photographic evidence and the consignor's own memory suggest that the coin has not changed appearance during its odd little journey through three pieces of plastic. PCGS PF-64 CAM (CAC), Rarity 8. (PCGS# 061740)
