Lot Title:
Judd-1540: 1877 Half-Dollar Pattern, silver, PCGS.
Description:
Avant Garde Collection. Ex-Harry Bass. Struck in silver and copper, with this, the silver type, possibly slightly more available than the same in copper. "Available" is a relative term, as there may be no more than three individual silver Judd-1540s not impounded in museums. References cite two dies used for the obverse, one with a die-crack connecting the first few stars, and one without. This is the latter die-marriage, whose discovery is attributed to Harry Bass. Minor mishandling of the coin becomes evident under examination, as the surface shows hairlines and zigzagging scratches beneath Liberty's chin. All stars and especially the date show evidence of very nice strike doubling south. PCGS PF-62, Rarity 7+. (PCGS# 061882)
