Lot Title:

Judd-1417: 1875 Quarter-Dollar Proof, aluminum, NGC.
Description:
Avant Garde Collection. Struck in aluminum and copper, the light metal version is rarer and more valuable by any standard, and indeed, it appears that this may be the only example that has exchanged hands within the last few decades. It cannot be mistaken for any other, as the obverse left field shows distinctive corruption of the aluminum surface. No significant oxidation rests on the surface, which permits exceptionally strong cameo effect to be readily enjoyed, with the extremely thick frost completely intact everywhere, including between the shield lines. Without knowing in advance of the aluminum planchet, the coin has more than a passing resemblance to a regularly issued silver proof. NGC PF-63 Ultra Cameo, Rarity 8.
