Lot Title:
Judd-1243: 1872 Half Eagle Proof, copper, PCGS.
Description:
Avant Garde Collection. Appearance superficially resembles that of a half-cent of earlier decades due to the unmistakable chocolate-brown "copper cent" patina apparent on both sides. The 1872 half-eagle die-trial was also struck in aluminum, and examples of either metal are exceedingly rare, with sources suggesting two to four known in copper. Details show incredibly deep precision for this coin, as good or better than could ever be expected on a regularly issued proof. A few tiny crumbles of green verdigris only add to the "old copper" character. PCGS PF-64 (BN), Rarity 7+. (PCGS# 061515)
