Lot Title:

Judd-1161: 1871 Gold Dollar Proof, copper, NGC.
|
Description:
|
Avant Garde Collection. Sharpness seems to be only on par with an actual issued proof striking, with trivial softness seen in some of the leaf edge details on the reverse. Various reference books list R.8 as an estimated rarity for the Judd-1161, but comparing photos suggests there may be more than three in existence, and technically, R.8 is reserved for coins with only up to three examples known. Still, that in no way impedes the desirability of this, apparently the finest example known. Pieces were struck in the present copper, aluminum and nickel, and all of them are almost impossibly rare. This coin probably competes with the recently certified Newman piece for qualification as the finest known, and displays extraordinarily attractive navy-blue iridescence with olive-salmon overtones. NGC PF-65 (BN), Rarity 7+.

Avant Garde Collection. This and the preceding Judd-1161 are struck off the same production dies, with Judd-1162 struck on an aluminum planchet instead of copper. Trivial pest affects the surfaces... |
