Lot Title:

Judd-1147: 1871 Silver Dollar Pattern, copper, NGC.
Description:
Avant Garde Collection. Thirteen stars surround Longacre's extremely popular princess design for this pattern silver dollar. As with other denominations featuring this proposed motif, a competing version features a "no stars" obverse, though unlike the case for the production Seated Liberty, the princess "with stars" probably possesses superior aesthetic balance than that with an empty field. The astonishing bluish iridescence emanating in wavelets from the highpoint details for this example, struck in copper, generates extraordinary eye-appeal as the cherry-red surfaces project spangling bands of alternating rose-blue color, depending on the changing angles of illumination. All details have been struck to an astounding level of precision, as befits a gem proof pattern of this caliber. NGC has even gone so far as to denote "cameo" for the presentation, which is quite an achievement for a copper piece with this much color. NGC PF66 CAM (RB), Rarity 6+. (PCGS# 061409)
