Lot Title:

Judd-1117: 1871 50-Cents Proof, copper, NGC.
Description:
Avant Garde Collection. Copper, aluminum and nickel represent the alloys listed as having been used to strike the 1871 die-trial specimens, the former being the most available, relatively speaking. However, the present example has much the appearance of having been struck in brass, due to chartreuse-copper coloration. Any example struck in any metal will be considered extremely rare, and although the presence of NGC's color designation (brown) affirms that they consider it a copper striking, it would be interesting to have metallurgical analysis determine the precise alloy. As usual for die-trials, the details are brought up to an almost-impossibly sharp level, perhaps even sharper than actual production proof coins. NGC PF-65 (BN), Rarity 7+. (PCGS# 071376)
