Judd-1084: 1871 10-Cents Pattern, aluminum, NGC.
Description:
Avant Garde Collection. At least three known alloys were used to strike the 1871 dime pattern with Longacre's princess on the obverse -- the present silver, copper, and aluminum -- and all are at least very rare. An example in any of these alloys comes to auction very infrequently. The reverse employs the standard die used to strike the Seated Liberty dime, with this obverse "seated princess" motif also being tested against other reverses, including that for the quarter, half-dollar and dollar. Thus, it is possible to collect a "set" of patterns of this type. Here is a remarkably pristine example that displays strong die polish, especially on the reverse, and impeccably struck details. Minimal oxidation has just begun to gently cloud the fields, to no detriment to eye-appeal. NGC PF-66 CAM, Rarity 7. (PCGS# 061343)
