Lot Title:

1814 (S-295) Plain 4. NGC AU details/burnished.
Description:
Wine And Dine Collection. The fully "bearded" die-state for S-295. Surfaces exhibit classic symptoms of very light burnishing, as the sienna-brown sheen shows faint undertones of slightly glossy honey-gold color. Evidently the coin has been expertly recolored to a virtually natural appearance. Typically, a large-cent is burnished in order to smooth the symptoms of corrosion, but the evidence is very limited for this example, relegated to a handful of tiny micro-pits in the obverse far left field, and perhaps another very small pit off to the left of the reverse. As it is, the overall appearance is very much that of an amazingly attractive classic-head, which is precisely what many type collectors are seeking. In this state of the obverse die, the beard at Liberty's chin and throat has completely formed, and the arcing die crack at lower right shows clearly even without a loupe. (PCGS# 036517)
