C Bechtler Gold $1 (Kagin-3), 28 grain, Center. PCGS AU-53.
Description:
Eunice Peters Estate. The Bechtler series from North Carolina falls outside the realm of mainstream U.S. coin collectors, yet even that can hardly explain the near-extreme lack of Kagin-3 examples that have appeared at auction over the past decade or so. Evidently, the R.6 rarity estimate ("very rare", 13-30 known) factually reflects a very low survival rate for this variety, which features "28. G" centered on the (presumed) obverse side. The (presumed) reverse dictates the denomination, and for this particular specimen shows 90 degree rotation by comparison to Federal issues. Off the market for many years, the appearance of a PCGS AU-53 example like this should give specialists reason to ponder a very generous bid. The quality seems to be unerringly "all in", with notable mint texture surviving between the peripheral letters, while central texture shows only vague, tiny abrasions. We note ideal lemon-gold color with a tinge of honey-tan spreading outward from some edge devices. (PCGS# 010058)
