Lot Title:
1652 Pine Tree Shilling, Large Planchet, 69.8 grams. PCGS VF-30.
Description:
Eunice Peters Estate. Noe-1, top of three points to "S", four roots descending right. Along with being one of the available varieties in the marketplace, Noe-1 stands as one of the most popular Massachusetts silver coins, due to the fact that "nice" examples can be found. Also, many collectors like the large size of the planchet, although such a thin coin squeezing through a rocker press left plenty of opportunities for variation and striking anomalies. This example shows some waviness to the planchet common to the series, but the waviness generally avoids peripheral devices, leaving a small indent at "H" on the tree side. Mellow navy-grey patina dominates the fields, and in classic fashion, the lettering and devices contrast pleasantly with dove-grey color. The tree side shows a handful of tiny handling digs, most notably at the extreme bottom, but they are ancient and toned into the rest of the coin. More important to the type collector, favorable centering means the peripheral devices are virtually "all there", along with mostly complete beading. (PCGS# 000023)
