1652 Pine Tree Shilling, Small Planchet, 71.1 grams. PCGS VF-30. 1652 Pine Tree Shilling, Small Planchet, 71.1 grams. PCGS VF-30.
Lot Title: 1652 Pine Tree Shilling, Small Planchet, 71.1 grams. PCGS VF-30.
Description: Eunice Peters Estate. Noe-29, with pellets at the trunk. Though usually an easy variety to attribute due to the distinctive upward sweep of the lower tree branches, this coin had a bit of a surprise lurking for the cataloger. The eight-dot "rosetta" beneath the tree is all "wrong" for Noe-1. In fact the exact "look" of the rosetta doesn't actually match any Noe variety, though it appears similar to Noe-16. To cut to the chase, the coin has been plugged at that position, and whomever created the repair erroneously engraved a rosetta beneath, rather than the four pellets that should be there. Given that bidders are now aware of this defect, the coin otherwise features relatively pleasing, hard glossy surfaces that exhibit low-contrast mushroom-grey patina in the lower relief areas, with a tinge of brighter silver on the details. The coin will stand out as a nice representative to anyone unaware of the repair. (PCGS# 000024)
