Lot Title:

1813 PCGS MS-63 (green label).

Description:
|
BD-1, Mintage: 95,428. BD-1 is often cited as the most available die-marriage within the entire series of early half-eagles. This is fortuitous, since collectively, the "capped head to left" represents one of the most difficult of all type coins to locate in premier condition, and collectors are fortunate that it is possible to find "nice" type examples due singlehandedly to 1813 production. It has survived in larger numbers than even the 1820, which was struck at three times the mintage. Initial impression of exceptional quality derives instantly from the profuse, bright lemon-yellow luster that practically shines from the fields. The vibrancy projects brilliant illumination upon deeply struck devices, emphasizing sharpness and meticulous detail. Every single star erupts from the field and possesses full definition, including the scalloped thirteenth star, and every strand of hair in Liberty's curls appears to be fully brought up. The eagle's motif, as well, features almost impossible sharpness, lacking just a hint of detail between a few segments in the talons. How did they manage to strike circulating coins so well two-hundred years ago? Hairline-free to an extent that will surprise many specialists who are used to seeing minor abuse, the conservative grade seems to have been determined by scattered superficial grazes in the fields. It is lightly marked here and there, but there is still decent probability for successful certification of this 1813 half-eagle, since some leniency must be advocated for these early gold pieces. The... |
