Lot Title:
1813 (BD-1) Capped half-eagle, AU-58, residue spot on reverse
Description:
Very good original surface quality beams with a hint of greenish iridescence and a prodigious supply of attractive mint luster. This is a gorgeous type coin, bearing only the faintest circulation rub and virtually all of the appeal of an uncirculated example. A few scant handling marks on Liberty's cheek and a bagmark on her chin are the closest thing to detractions, but they are merely incidental and expected of a minimally handled gold coin. Many (if not most) early gold coins of this caliber are in slabs, so for the collector who wishes to add an uncertified coin to an album or other type of presentation, an unusual opportunity is afforded here. Keen-eyed collectors will note an inoffensive spot of glue residue on the left end of the reverse motto; it is presumed that it can easily and safely be removed through proper conservation.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

BD-1, Mintage: 95,428. BD-1 is often cited as the most available die-marriage within the entire series of early half-eagles. This is fortuitous, since collectively, the "capped head to left"... |

It is lightly marked here and there, but there is still decent probability for successful certification of this 1813 half-eagle, since some leniency must be advocated for these early gold pieces. The... |
